OVERVIEW

Course Duration:
Group size: 10 Maximum
Age Range: 18+

Join the Woodland Ways team as we travel back to Scotland to descend the River Tay. The beautiful River Tay begins her life as a small spring on Ben Lui, 119 miles later she is Scotland's longest river as she emerges 2 miles wide flowing out to the North Sea.

Jason is delighted to have teamed up again with his buddy Rich of Canoe Trails to offer this exceptional opportunity to join us as we navigate the river in our craft from Loch Tay, through Kenmore, Abefeldy, Grandtully, Dunkeld and on to Perth. Making camp each night on the banks of the river we will develop your existing canoe and camp craft skills with some great paddling on a traditional Scottish canoe journey, where we will share tips, hints, stories and bushcraft skills throughout.

Prepare for the expedition

The River Tay can be a technically challenging river to those who have not paddled before we therefore desire you to have been in a canoe before. Although no experience on moving water is required you will get more from the trip if you have been exposed to moving water before. We would recommend you attend our introductory days on the River Derwent at Matlock if you are a complete novice first. Or alternatively our River Spey expedition where the water is more forgiving. Give us a call for a 10% discount off the introductory day if you book onto The River Tay Canoe Descent. Or if you wish to book both the Spey and the Tay give us a call for a discount off both

The River

The water on the Tay will vary depending on flow but you can expect Open Water on the Lock, and grades 2- 3 in places on the River(Bouncy!). We may portage areas where necessary depending on water levels. The trip will be operated in Tandem crafts, but there may be opportunities to try solo canoeing in places for those who would like to experience this. If you have a strong desire to solo the length of the river with us you must have paddling experience and we will try our best to accommodate it at an extra cost if our ratio's allow

What's Included?

The accommodation for this trip is wild camping, and as such you will need basic camping equipment. Evening meals and breakfasts are provided during the course, but you will need to provide your own snack lunches. Please refer to the kit list provided. We will provide all the canoeing equipment you will need, along with trained staff.
