Two drill bow-drill fire, a first known attempt?

Two drill bow-drill fire, a first known attempt?

Two drills, one bow, creating simultaneously two embers, into two tinder bundles, achieving two fires by friction in one take! Is this a worlds first... we're not sure, but chatting around our global instructor contacts no one has heard of it before, so let us know if you have.

Late last year Senior Instructor Jay Jenner was given a challenge. Here are the results.

You may be asking why?

The reply is always why not? It was a challenge set to Jay whilst he was delivering and instructing our two-year Woodland Wayer Course for their advanced fire weekend in our Oxfordshire woods, by a customer (now Woodland Ways apprentice) Leo. I mean how difficult can it be right? Well as Jay found out, it’s quite difficult.

It was in the evening, pouring with rain, and conversations as always about friction fire techniques were flowing. After reflection and stimulated by the curiosity into if it could be done, how would it be done? Jay decided "there is one way to find out". Over a period of 30 minutes the concept was taken and nurtured into fruition.

Some great advice Jay was given early in his career was how important observation is both in learning skills and in the environment around you, and what it has to teach you. You can draw so much from it all, so, he invites you to do just that.

In his next blog Jay will go into the detail and the thought processes behind Double Drill Bow Drill as he went through the experience. This is not about practical application, it is more the sense of wonder and curiosity that Bushcraft can bring to peoples lives, its about understanding materials, that connection to natural resources and attention to detail. We hope you enjoy the video.
