The Winter Clothing Making Weekends immerse you in the ancient and highly refined craft of traditional Arctic winter clothing, developed over generations to withstand some of the harshest environments on Earth. These garments are not fashion items; they are survival systems—designed to protect the body from biting winds, deep snow, driving precipitation, and sustained sub-zero temperatures.

Across two intensive weekends, you will craft a complete set of authentic winter clothing using natural materials, traditional construction techniques, and proven designs that continue to outperform many modern alternatives in extreme cold.

By the end of the course, you will have produced:

  • A fur-trimmed winter snow smock

  • Wool-lined mukluks

  • Removable double-layer wool-lined mittens with leather outers

Together, these three essential items form a winter clothing system capable of performing reliably in temperatures of -10°C and well below.

Craft, Connection, and Cold-Weather Survival

Constructing your own clothing from natural materials represents one of the deepest expressions of the craft element of bushcraft. It forges a tangible connection between material, maker, and environment. Every stitch reinforces an understanding of why early humans were able to expand into colder landscapes—and why animals such as deer sit so centrally in our story.

Without hide, sinew, bone needles, and wool, entire regions of the world would have remained inaccessible to our ancestors. This course honours that lineage. Wearing clothing you have stitched yourself fundamentally changes how you move through cold environments—it is not just warmer, it is more meaningful.

While many participants go on to wear their completed garments during our Winter Expedition, you do not need to be joining that expedition to attend this course. It is open to anyone with an interest in traditional skills, winter travel, or heritage craft.

Outer Leather & Inner Wool Mittens

The course begins with the construction of double-layer mittens, combining removable wool-lined inner mitts with durable leather outers trimmed with fur.

This design is deliberate. Mittens trap warm air far more effectively than fingered gloves—an essential principle in extreme cold. As we often explain:

  • Five fingers in five separate gloves will stay warm…
  • Five fingers sharing the same space will stay hot.

The removable inner layers provide flexibility and safety. If dexterity is briefly required, the outer layer can be removed. If moisture is introduced—through spillage or a fall through ice—the components can be dried more efficiently.

In sustained cold environments, mittens are not an accessory; they are survival equipment. As the old saying goes:

“Lose your knife, lose your life.”

In deep winter, the same can be said for your hands.

"Lose your hands... change of plans...".

Mukluks and the Winter Snow Smock

Once stitching techniques and patterning are established, attention turns to mukluks—a form of winter footwear refined over centuries for cold, dry, and snowy conditions.

Mukluks allow the feet to move naturally, generating heat while retaining it efficiently. When paired with overboots in wetter conditions, this system consistently outperforms modern insulated boots in deep cold. Fur trim below the knee seals warmth in and snow out, while simple lashing systems allow adjustment even when wearing mittens.

From there, participants move on to the final and most visually striking piece: the winter snow smock.

Constructed from tough natural fibres and trimmed with fur around the hood and cuffs, the smock forms a critical outer barrier against wind and snow. The fur-lined hood creates a microclimate of warm air around the face, reducing heat loss and frost exposure, while also providing exceptional comfort when raised or lowered.

It is functional, protective—and unmistakably powerful in appearance.

Materials, Ethics, and Decoration

All fur used during this course is ethically sourced as a byproduct of other activities. Real fur is essential for genuine cold-weather performance; synthetic alternatives simply do not function effectively in extreme winter environments.

Participants also have the opportunity to decorate and personalise their garments. Historically, Arctic clothing often carried cultural identity through beadwork, stitching patterns, and embellishment. You are encouraged to bring your own style into your work, creating garments that are both practical and deeply personal.

Practical Information

  • All materials and tuition are included
  • Both hand sewing and machine techniques are taught
  • Prior sewing experience is beneficial but not essential
  • Some homework may be required to complete projects fully
  • Optional camping is available in our private woodland (arranged in advance)
  • Local B&B accommodation is also available nearby

In Summary

The Winter Clothing Making Weekends offer a rare opportunity to step into a lineage of cold-weather craftsmanship that stretches back thousands of years. You will leave not only with a complete and functional winter clothing system, but with a profound appreciation of how humans have survived, travelled, and thrived in extreme environments.

This is a course about self-reliance, heritage, and respect for materials—and about producing clothing that truly earns its place in the wild.
