The Willow Basketry Day Course offers an immersive introduction to one of the most enduring and practical traditional crafts. Working with willow in a relaxed woodland setting, participants are guided through the process of transforming this flexible, renewable material into a strong, functional basket to take home and use.

Basketry is a skill that combines rhythm, structure, and sensitivity to material. Throughout the day, participants develop an understanding of how willow behaves, how tension and spacing affect strength, and how thoughtful construction creates containers that are both durable and elegant.

This course is ideal for beginners and those curious about traditional crafts. No prior experience is required, and the pace of the day allows time for learning, repetition, and enjoyment of the process.

Morning – Materials and Foundations

The day begins with a warm welcome from the instructional team and an introduction to the structure of the course. Participants are introduced to willow as a material, learning about different varieties, how and when it is harvested, and how preparation affects flexibility and strength.

Instruction then moves into the basic principles of basket construction, including base formation, uprights, weavers, and tension control. These foundations are demonstrated clearly before participants begin work on their own baskets.

Under close guidance, participants start building a small round willow basket, learning how to establish a solid base and raise the sides evenly. Emphasis is placed on developing a steady rhythm and understanding how each movement contributes to the overall structure.

Afternoon – Refinement and Variation

As baskets begin to take shape, participants continue weaving and refining their technique. Instructors circulate throughout the group, offering individual guidance and helping troubleshoot common challenges.

A break is taken for a self-catered packed lunch, allowing time to rest, reflect on progress, and discuss basketry traditions and applications. Hot and cold water are available for drinks, and a base-camp style toilet is on site for comfort.

The afternoon focuses on completing and refining baskets. Participants learn how to shape the rim, finish edges neatly, and ensure their basket is robust and balanced.

Depending on time and progress, additional techniques are introduced, which may include:

  • Alternative weaving patterns
  • Adding simple handles
  • Creating oval or slightly varied forms
  • Discussion of sourcing willow, and other suitable materials, from hedgerows responsibly

These elements provide inspiration for future projects and help participants understand how a small set of techniques can be adapted to produce a wide range of basket styles.

In Summary

The Willow Basketry Day Course provides a rewarding introduction to traditional basket making, combining practical skill with an appreciation of natural materials and heritage craft. Participants leave with a completed willow basket, hands-on experience of core basketry techniques, and the confidence to continue practising independently.

This course is ideal for those seeking a calm, creative day in the woodland, and for anyone interested in sustainable craft, bushcraft skills, or traditional making.
