Making camp each night on the banks of the river we will develop your existing canoe and camp craft skills with some great paddling on a traditional Scottish canoe journey, where we will share tips, hints, stories and bushcraft skills throughout.

Prepare for the expedition

Although no experience is required you will get more from the trip if you have been exposed to moving water before.

We would recommend you attend our introductory days on the River Derwent at Matlock if you are a complete novice first. Give us a call for a 10% discount off the introductory day if you book onto The River Spey Canoe Descent.

We will assist you with getting to grips with how to control the canoes, to really make the best of them as we travel through this beautiful environment. Having that confidence of some experience prior to the expedition will really help you enjoy the bouncy sections of this river.

The River

This iconic Salmon fishing river flows from the foot of the Cairngorms out to the sea offering incredible scenery along the way. We'll be paddling one of the most iconic journeys in the UK, and while it's often paddled, no two trips can be the same due to the dynamic nature of the river.

The water on the Spey will vary depending on flow but you can expect grades 2-3 in places (Bouncy!), although we can portage the canoes it would be better if you had previous exposure to allow you to run them. We offer an introduction to moving water course that would be just the step you need if you're new to canoeing. Our team's priority is to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable experience in this amazing place.

The trip will be operated in Tandem crafts, but should you wish to Solo paddle this trip, this can be arranged for an additional £200.

What's Included?

For the duration of this journey we will be finding wild camping spots on the bank of the river. We will find a good site and set up ready for a hearty evening meal while the light is still in our favour. You will need basic camping equipment, but we'll bring the communal kit for cooking! The following morning we'll have a filling breakfast to fuel the day's paddle. You'll need to bring some simple lunches and snacks for keeping up those energy levels. Please refer to the kit list provided. We will also provide all the canoeing equipment you will need, along with trained staff to make this trip one to remember.
