Join the Woodland Ways Team and our in country partners, led by Humberto Costa, on an epic two week adventure to the Brazilian Amazon Jungle environment. Here you will spend your days living and working within the Jungle, plus a few days either side for travel and tourist experiences, as we journey deep into the heart of the rainforest.
We will guide you through the essential skills for surviving within one of the planets most challenging and yet rewarding environments. Here Jason writes...
“I remember my first experience of the jungle 2 decades ago, I had naively imagined an environment full of resources easily to hand that would make my life such an unimaginably comfortable existence that why would I leave… but nothing prepared me for how little I knew. As I picked up my first guide book on the trees of the jungle and opened the pages, with just list upon list of scientific names which comprised pretty much the whole book, I knew I was about to embark on a life long journey of knowledge that I would never complete… this environment is not one to be taken lightly, but wow, when you embrace it nothing can compare. I learnt so much from the indigenous people I met, and the local experts who live and breathe this environment, and therein lies the key to opening up the opportunities that the jungle can provide. In 2025 our clients had the most profoundly deep experiences both in terms of skills and the spiritual nature of the jungle and its people that it changed their lives”
You will join our team consisting of biologists, military personnel, expedition medics, chef, translators- all of whom have extensive experience in this environment, and of course the indigenous tribes who live along the river. With this team you will learn the skills of what it takes to survive in the largest tropical forest in the world-. And as per our usual ethics, we keep your costs as low as possible whilst ensuring your money goes in to supporting the local tribes people and economy. We do not think that this can be matched.
We will begin our training from a Fixed camp within the jungle, where over 5 days we will cover a variety of different training modules as outlined below, following this we then immerse ourselves into an indigenous riverine village to further hone our skills as we gain experience and knowledge from the true masters of the jungle, those that have made it their home over thousands of years. We then progress to join the Tatuyu tribe, old friends of ours where you can expect a deeply spiritual connection, aswell as raw skills including weaving rucksacks, fishing, hunting and more. We culminate our expedition with a final phase of putting everything into practice where you are left in the jungle, in small groups, to set up camp and survive relying on the skills you have learnt.

Amazon Jungle Bushcraft Expedition
Spend 10 days living and working within the Brazilian Amazon
Jungle environment, plus a few days either side for travel and tourist
experiences, as we journey deep into the heart of the rainforest.
Leadership & Indigenous Partnership
The expedition is led by the Woodland Ways team in partnership with highly respected local professionals and indigenous communities. In-country guidance is provided by Humberto Costa, whose lifelong relationship with the Amazon ensures access, safety, and cultural integrity throughout the journey.
The wider support team may include biologists, expedition medics, military personnel, professional chefs, translators, and master craftspeople. Most significantly, members of indigenous tribes play a central instructional role—sharing knowledge that cannot be learned from books or short visits.
Woodland Ways operates on the principle that true expertise deserves fair recognition. This expedition is structured to ensure meaningful financial support flows directly to local communities, reinforcing long-term relationships built on trust, reciprocity, and respect.
Expedition Structure
The expedition unfolds in carefully considered phases, each building capability, confidence, and environmental literacy.
Arrival & Acclimatisation
Participants are met at Eduardo Gomes International Airport and transferred to local accommodation for the first night. This initial phase allows for rest, equipment checks, safety briefings, and orientation, delivered in an unhurried and professional setting.
Early the following morning, travel continues by vehicle toward the jungle interior. As infrastructure fades, the expedition transitions from preparation to immersion.
Fixed Camp Immersion
Operating from a fixed jungle camp for approximately five days, participants establish the foundational skills required for safe and effective rainforest living. This phase emphasises precision, repetition, and sound judgement rather than speed or endurance.
Instruction is delivered both formally and organically, responding to conditions, opportunities, and teaching moments as they arise. While the jungle resists rigid scheduling, learning remains deliberate and progressive.
Core areas of instruction include:
Jungle Psychology & Decision-Making - Understanding cognitive load, fear responses, and decision-making in high-humidity, sensory-dense environments. Participants learn to replace urgency with calm efficiency.
Navigation & Spatial Awareness - Natural navigation techniques, compass and map work, river travel, and an honest appraisal of GPS limitations beneath dense canopy. Movement is purposeful, controlled, and deliberate.
Tools, Materials & Craft - Use, maintenance, and adaptation of jungle tools, alongside the crafting of implements from natural materials. Tool discipline becomes a cornerstone of daily living.
Cordage & Construction - Producing rope, bindings, baskets, and nets using both natural fibres and minimal modern materials. Structural integrity and efficiency are prioritised.
Food Systems - Ethical hunting, trapping, fishing, and plant use, with strong emphasis on sustainability and local practice. Food preparation and preservation techniques support longer-term jungle living.
Shelter & Comfort - Designing shelters that manage rainfall, airflow, insects, and heat. Hammock systems, clothing management, and sleep quality are refined as critical performance factors.
Water Management - Locating, collecting, filtering, and purifying water from multiple jungle sources, alongside dehydration management and water discipline.
Medical & Emergency Care - Jungle-specific first aid, wound management, envenomation protocols, and evacuation planning, delivered under the supervision of experienced expedition medics.
Fauna Awareness - Behavioural understanding of jungle wildlife, with particular attention to snakes, insects, and large mammals. Risk mitigation is taught through knowledge rather than avoidance.
Indigenous Cultural Immersion
Following the fixed camp phase, the expedition continues by river to two distinct indigenous communities.
The first is a blackwater river community specialising in weaving, raft use, and sustainable river living. Over several days, participants learn flotation techniques, weaving methods, and the cultural significance embedded within practical craft.
The expedition then travels further upriver to join the Tatuyo people. Here, instruction deepens into advanced jungle skills—tree climbing for food collection, traditional hunting and fishing techniques, and the creation of natural pigments—set within a spiritual and cultural framework that reveals the jungle as both provider and ancestor.
Final Independent Phase
In the final stage of the expedition, participants are divided into small groups and required to operate independently with reduced equipment. Camp selection, shelter construction, food acquisition, and fire management are all undertaken without direct instruction.
The duration of this phase is intentionally undisclosed. This element introduces a profound psychological component and represents the culmination of the expedition—quiet, demanding, and deeply revealing.
A Return to Civilisation
Extraction is followed by travel to the confluence of the Rio Negro and Solimões, where participants have the opportunity to swim in the Rio Negro alongside pink river dolphins before sharing a final meal together. A return to accommodation provides space for reflection and transition.
On the final day, transfers are made back to the airport. The expedition operates bilingually in English and Portuguese, with professional translators available throughout.
Participants leave with advanced rainforest capability, heightened environmental awareness, and a refined understanding of what it means to live responsibly and competently in one of the world’s most complex ecosystems.
Is this course for me?
This is a genuine expedition into a remote environment and should be approached with seriousness, preparation, and respect.
Everyone is different, and at no point will you be forced to do anything that you may not wish to participate in. You should recognise that operating in a jungle environment will require a certain level of physical fitness. By no means do you have to be an athlete but if you feel your cardio fitness or weight may be an issue already, it probably is. If you can comfortably walk a full day on the British hillside or countryside over rough terrain without issue you should be fine. If you cannot do this, in this scenario you have plenty of time to get yourself operationally fit prior to the expedition, look at it as a challenge! The heat and humidity will be high so please also bear this in mind. Once you are committed to the expedition extraction is impossible in some areas, and you will have no communications with the outside world until we reach our RV points.
For those ready to meet the Amazon on its own terms, this expedition offers an experience of rare depth, authenticity, and lasting significance.
Safety & Professional Standards
All Woodland Ways expeditions operate in accordance with The Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018, ensuring financial protection where applicable. Overseas expeditions are aligned with the British Safety Standard BS8848, reflecting our commitment to rigorous planning, risk management, and professional delivery.
Expeditions into extreme environments require experience, preparation, and accountability. Woodland Ways and our trusted partners are long‑established, highly regarded, and operate to exacting professional standards. We welcome informed questions and are confident in the systems in place to support you throughout this exceptional expedition.
