To start things off...
Initially we start in the classroom with a brew and here we will unlock the mysteries of map and compass:
- Understanding the map, signs and symbols
- Understanding contours, what they mean and how to use them
- Understanding scales
- Using grid references
- Understanding compasses and their features
- Calculating distances and basic route planning
- Equipment choice
- Emergency procedures and considerations

Moving on...
Once we're happy with the classroom knowledge it's time to apply that to a route and gain those 'hands on' skills. These include:
- Interpreting the map within the landscape
- Orientating the map to identify features
- Understanding the practical applications of the compass
- Calculating grid references using features and triangulation
- Taking bearings from map and the landscape
- Converting measured distances into the landscape using pacings and timings
