It is a favoured method of transport for us and forms part of many of our larger expeditions from the Iconic Yukon River through to paddling the expanses of Sweden, and tackling the amazing waters of Wild Scotland

One common question we face is how to get practical expeditioning experience of handling an open canoe... before an expedition. So here it is! We are delighted to announce the opportunity to join Jason (White water canoe leader qualified) for a day with some excellent guidance on undertaking a journey in a canoe on moving water. Ultimately placing your canoe exactly where you want it, on a stretch of river with a variety of moving waters.

From our base on the Haddon Hall Estate in the stunning landscape of the Peak District, we begin the day at "the barn" to familiarise ourselves with our craft. With a cup of tea in hand we will guide you through how to set up a boat safely for moving water, and where to place yourself, your gear, and your paddle to get the best out of the canoe. With an inspection of the nearby river from our local bridge to explain moving water we then jump in the vehicles to do the ferry as we head to the River Derwent to our get on point.

Introduction to Moving Water Canoe Journeys

An overview of the day

We begin on slow moving water, learning positioning, trim, eddies, ferry glides, power strokes, hanging draws and many other jargon that at first can appear quite scary. As the day builds so does your confidence and knowledge base on paddling mechanics.

For those that wish we will also cover rescue techniques from the water.

Our instructors have decades of experience on some of the most remote waters in the world to pull on to ensure you have a fun and action packed day to give you the confidence to get on the water.

We culminate the day with some of the biggest white water in the area for you to take our canoes down the slalom course in Matlock Bath... a wonderful confidence builder under the expert safe eye of our team.

Logistics for the day

We will aim to be on the water as soon as possible but there is always a lot of preparation and movement of vehicles beforehand, and so arrival times at our World Of Bushcraft Store in Rowsley needs to be for 08:30. You are welcome to come and camp in our wild woods for free the evening before the course if you wish... although you will need to be self sufficient and let us know at the time of booking. If you prefer, you can meet us on the morning of the course at our World of Bushcraft Centre or "The Barn".
