The Willow Basketry Workshop is a full-day, hands-on introduction to the traditional craft of basket making using willow. Running from 09:00 to 17:00, this relaxed and engaging workshop invites participants to slow down, work with their hands, and transform raw material into a functional object to take home and use.

With a maximum group size of six, the day is deliberately kept small to ensure close instruction, plenty of individual guidance, and an unhurried learning environment. The workshop is suitable for those aged 16 and over, with under-18s welcome when accompanied by an adult.

By the end of the day, participants will have crafted their own small round willow basket, gaining both practical skills and a deeper appreciation for this ancient and highly adaptable craft.

Working with Willow
Willow has been used for basketry for thousands of years, valued for its strength, flexibility, and abundance. During the workshop, instructors introduce the basic principles of working with willow, including how it behaves when soaked, bent, and woven.

Participants are guided step by step through the basket-making process, learning how to:

  • Prepare and handle willow correctly
  • Form a strong and balanced basket base
  • Build up the sides using traditional weaving techniques
  • Shape and finish a neat, functional basket

Instruction is clear and practical, with techniques demonstrated before participants work at their own pace, supported throughout by experienced tutors.

Beyond the Basics
As the day progresses, the workshop broadens to explore the wider world of basketry. Depending on time and group interest, participants are introduced to:

  • Alternative weaving patterns and textures
  • The basics of adding handles
  • Considerations for oval baskets and other forms
  • How and where to source willow and basketry materials from the hedgerow

These discussions provide valuable context and inspiration for those wishing to continue basket making beyond the workshop.

A Relaxed and Supportive Environment
The workshop takes place at our World of Bushcraft Centre in Rowsley, within the Peak District National Park, offering a comfortable and inspiring setting for learning traditional skills.

All tools and materials are provided, and tea and coffee are available throughout the day, helping to create a friendly, informal atmosphere where questions and conversation are encouraged.

Only paid participants will have materials allocated for hands-on work. Under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

In Summary
The Willow Basketry Workshop is an ideal introduction to working with natural materials and learning a timeless, practical craft. Participants leave with a finished basket, a solid foundation in willow basketry techniques, and the confidence to explore further projects at home or in the woods.

This workshop is well suited to anyone interested in heritage crafts, sustainable skills, working with natural materials, or simply enjoying a rewarding day of making by hand.
