The Intermediate Spoon Carving Workshop is a full-day, hands-on experience designed for those who already have some familiarity with spoon carving and would like to refine their skills, develop confidence, and explore more advanced techniques. Running from 09:00 to 17:00, the day offers the time and space needed to move beyond the basics and focus on form, efficiency, and expression.

With a maximum group size of eight, the workshop is kept deliberately small, ensuring close instruction, individual feedback, and plenty of opportunity to ask questions and experiment. The course is suitable for those aged 16 and over, with under-18s welcome when accompanied by an adult.

By the end of the day, participants will have produced a refined, well-balanced wooden spoon, carved entirely by hand from a sustainably sourced billet of green wood.

Moving Beyond the Basics
A good spoon is one of the most fundamental tools in any kitchen—whether at home, on camp, or deep in the woodland. At an intermediate level, however, spoon carving becomes about more than function alone. It is about flow, balance, efficiency, and developing a personal style.

This workshop builds on core carving knowledge, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of how wood fibres behave, how tools interact with the grain, and how small changes in technique can dramatically improve results.

Participants are guided through:

  • Selecting suitable green wood and understanding grain orientation
  • Sustainable harvesting and material preparation
  • Efficient billet processing and layout
  • Advanced knife grips and cutting sequences
  • Refining bowl depth, symmetry, and transitions
  • Improving handle comfort, strength, and elegance
  • Introducing subtle decorative and stylistic elements

Rather than following a fixed pattern, participants are encouraged to respond to the wood itself, allowing each spoon to develop its own character while remaining practical and durable.

Tools, Technique, and Confidence
Instruction focuses on controlled, confident tool use, helping participants work more efficiently with less effort. Instructors share techniques that reduce fatigue, improve accuracy, and lead to cleaner finishes.

Time is also given to problem-solving common carving challenges, such as tear-out, asymmetry, and over-cutting. These discussions help participants build the confidence to recover from mistakes and continue carving independently beyond the workshop.

A Supportive Learning Environment
The workshop is held at our World of Bushcraft Centre in the Peak District, providing a comfortable and inspiring setting for focused craft learning.

All tools and materials are provided, and tea and coffee are available throughout the day, helping to maintain a relaxed, sociable atmosphere. Instruction is supportive and encouraging, making the workshop suitable for those transitioning from beginner level into more confident, independent carving.

Only paid participants will have materials allocated for hands-on work. Under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

In Summary
The Intermediate Spoon Carving Workshop offers the opportunity to slow down, refine technique, and take real satisfaction in producing a spoon of quality and character. Participants leave with a finished utensil, a deeper understanding of wood and tools, and the confidence to continue developing their carving skills independently.

This workshop is ideal for anyone who has completed an introductory spoon carving course—or equivalent experience—and wants to take the next step in their green woodworking journey.
