During this 1 day course you are invited to join our ML or HML qualified instructors to unlock the mysteries of the humble map and gain confidence in route planning and compass skills.

The course is split between a morning of classroom work before we walk out the door to get "hands on". You will be provided with a map of the area, a compass and guided through all of the skills necessary to plan and execute your own navigational lowland walks using the footpath network.

This course is based from our head office in Rowsley in the beautiful Peak District National Park. The day runs from 09:30-16:30 ish.

To start things off...

Initially we start in the classroom with a brew and here we will unlock the mysteries of map and compass:

- Understanding the map, signs and symbols
- Understanding contours, what they mean and how to use them
- Understanding scales
- Using grid references
- Understanding compasses and their features
- Calculating distances and basic route planning
- Equipment choice
- Emergency procedures and considerations

Moving on...

Once we're happy with the classroom knowledge it's time to apply that to a route and gain those 'hands on' skills. These include:

- Interpreting the map within the landscape
- Orientating the map to identify features
- Understanding the practical applications of the compass
- Calculating grid references using features and triangulation
- Taking bearings from map and the landscape
- Converting measured distances into the landscape using pacings and timings
