- Course Duration: 09.00 - 17.00
- Group size: 8 Maximum
- Age Range: 16+
Come and spend the day learning the endangered craft of Nålebinding. During this one day workshop you will be taken through of process of how to create a warm and comfortable Beanie hat using the art of Nålebinding and the Oslo stitch, one needle and short lengths of 100% wool yarn at a time.
Nålebinding is on the Heritage Crafts red list as an endangered craft with its earliest ever example being dated at 6000 BC and the majority of examples coming from between the 5th and 10th century AD. It pre dates both knitting and crochet and is of great historical and cultural significance in the areas where it was mostly widely used.
During the day, as well as learning about the history, folklore and usefulness of these garments, you will learn how to create a beanie hat that fits you perfectly and will keep you or the recipient nice and warm. You will learn about the needles and their creation, how to make "the start", which is considered the trickiest part of this craft, thumb tensioning, making a chain of Oslo stitches, joining that chain, reductions, increases and felted joins.
There are no real patterns as you would expect when kitting or crocheting so if the hat is for you we can take the required measurement on the day, if the hat you make will be a gift then you will need the recipients measurements to ensure a good fit. You will to measure their head circumference and their crown to brim measurement and bring these measurements to the workshop.
This is course is for over 16's although under 18's must be accompanied by an adult. Workshops are held at our World Of Bushcraft Centre in the Peak District , where free tea and coffee will be available.
