The Spatula Carving Workshop is a practical half-day craft experience running from 09:00 to 13:00, designed to introduce participants to green wood carving through the creation of one of the most fundamental tools in any kitchen or camp.

With a maximum group size of eight, the workshop offers a relaxed and supportive learning environment, allowing for close instruction and individual guidance. The course is suitable for those aged 16 and over, with under-18s welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult.

By the end of the morning, participants will have carved their own handmade wooden spatula from sustainably sourced green wood—an item that is both practical and deeply satisfying to use.

A Simple Tool, Made Well
The spatula is a humble yet essential utensil, relied upon whether cooking at home, over a campfire, or deep in the woodland. Making your own elevates it from a overlooked object to a personal tool, shaped by hand and intended to last.

This workshop focuses on slowing down the process, encouraging participants to work with the natural grain of the wood to create a spatula that is comfortable in the hand, functional in use, and unique in character.

Skills and Techniques
Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants are taken step by step through the carving process. Instruction includes:

  • Selecting and understanding suitable green wood
  • Principles of sustainable harvesting
  • Safe and effective knife use
  • Fundamental carving grips and body positioning
  • Reading wood grain and processing fibres cleanly
  • Refining shape and finish for everyday use

No previous carving experience is required, and all instruction is delivered in a clear, practical, and encouraging manner.

A Relaxed and Supportive Day
The workshop takes place at our World of Bushcraft Centre in the Peak District, providing an ideal environment for focused learning and traditional craft.

All tools and materials are provided, and free tea and coffee are available throughout the morning. Only paid participants will have resources allocated for hands-on participation. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

In Summary
The Spatula Carving Workshop offers a satisfying introduction to green wood carving, combining practical skill with traditional craft. Participants leave with a finished spatula, a deeper understanding of working wood by hand, and the confidence to continue carving at home.

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in wood carving, bushcraft skills, traditional crafts, or creating useful everyday objects by hand.
