Joseph Philbin

APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR

Joseph first joined Woodland Ways in 2011 at the age of 16, beginning his journey on the two-year Woodland Wayer course. That same year, he was invited to join the instructor apprenticeship, an opportunity that deepened both his understanding and his commitment to life in the woods. Over the years, he has worn many hats within the company, from working in the shop to instructing on courses, all while continuing to learn, grow, and contribute to the wider team.

His love for traditional skills led him to specialise in foraging and plant lore, becoming a Foraging instructor by the age of 21. Through his work with Woodland Ways, Joseph has had the chance to train and teach across a wide range of wild environments: from canoe expeditions in Sweden to tracking wildlife in South Africa, where he earned his CyberTracker Level 2. A personal highlight came when he was asked to speak at the Pitt Rivers Museum in collaboration with Oxford University, sharing his research and demonstrating how to create prehistoric bone flutes, an experience that beautifully blended his passions for bushcraft, history, and music.

Joseph’s fascination with the natural world began in childhood, shaped by forest walks with his parents, a love of Scouting, and a series of books that brought prehistoric living vividly to life. Even as a child, he was captivated by the question of how our ancestors survived and thrived, laying the foundation for his lifelong love of bushcraft and its historical roots. That same childhood curiosity now fuels his drive to teach others.

Alongside foraging, Joseph is a keen craftsperson, forging his own knives as a blacksmith and working with natural materials like bone and green wood to produce a wide array of crafts. He’s particularly interested in what it means to live simply and sustainably in the British landscape, drawing on ancestral knowledge to connect more deeply with the land. Now an experienced educator in the final stages of his apprenticeship, he regularly teaches across a wide range of Woodland Ways courses for both adults and young people. Known for his energetic delivery and deep-rooted enthusiasm, his sessions are full of curiosity, practical learning, and the occasional terrible joke. Whatever the setting, his goal remains the same: to help people feel curious, capable, and at home in the natural world.
