Michaela Garner
APPRENTICE INSTRUCTOR
Growing up on a council estate in Hull, Michaela never imagined a future leading bushcraft sessions and inspiring others in the outdoors, but that’s exactly where a love of nature, a resourceful spirit, and a passion for community have led her.
Her journey began in 2018, when she founded a grassroots, accessible forest school group for home-educating families driven by her determination to give her own children the freedom and outdoor learning she valued so deeply. Facing barriers like cost, lack of inclusive provision, and limited training access, she taught herself the essentials, sourced funding, and completed her Forest School Leader qualification (against the odds, and mostly online during lockdowns!).
The group soon became a vital resource for local families especially those with SEND and mental health challenges offering a welcoming, unstructured space where children and adults could learn side-by-side.
When her group’s teenagers asked for more bushcraft, skills she set her sights on training with Woodland Ways. That first course was transformative, leading to a deeper commitment to bushcraft, a string of new skills, and eventually, a life-changing opportunity: an apprenticeship with Woodland Ways. She was inspired by the welcoming, passionate team she found.
Today, she brings her lived experience, bushcraft training, and passion for inclusive learning to the wider community. From running green prescribing sessions for adults to offering free holiday provision for children, her work remains rooted in accessibility, empowerment, and connection.
Her story is a powerful reminder that bushcraft isn’t just about skills it’s about community, growth, and possibility.
