Join the Woodland Ways Team and our in country partners, led by Humberto Costa, on an epic two week adventure to the Brazilian Amazon Jungle environment. Here you will spend 10 days living and working within the Jungle, plus a few days either side for travel and tourist experiences, as we journey deep into the heart of the rainforest.
We will guide you through the essential skills for surviving within one of the planets most challenging and yet rewarding environments. Here Jason writes “I remember my first experience of the jungle 2 decades ago, I had naively imagined an environment full of resources easily to hand that would make my life such an unimaginably comfortable existence that why would I leave… but nothing prepared me for how little I knew. As I picked up my first guide book on the trees of the jungle and opened the pages, with just list upon list of scientific names which comprised pretty much the whole book, I knew I was about to embark on a life long journey of knowledge that I would never complete… this environment is not one to be taken lightly, but wow, when you embrace it nothing can compare. I learnt so much from the indigenous people I met, and the local experts who live and breathe this environment, and therein lies the key to opening up the opportunities that the jungle can provide. I have been working on pulling this expedition together now for two years alongside a man I greatly admire Humberto Costa, and I am excited to be joining you on our 2025 expedition”
You will join our team consisting of biologists, military personnel, expedition medics, chef, translators- all of whom have extensive experience in this environment, and of course the indigenous tribes who live along the river. With this team you will learn the skills of what it takes to survive in the largest tropical forest in the world-. And as per our usual ethics, we keep your costs as low as possible whilst ensuring your money goes in to supporting the local tribes people and economy. We do not think that this can be matched.
We will begin our training from a Fixed camp within the jungle, where over 5 days we will cover a variety of different training modules as outlined below, following this we then immerse ourselves into an indigenous riverine village to further hone our skills as we gain experience and knowledge from the true masters of the jungle, those that have made it their home over thousands of years. We culminate our expedition with a final phase of putting everything into practice where you are left in the jungle, either alone or in pairs/small groups, to set up camp and survive relying on the skills you have learnt.

Amazon Jungle Bushcraft Expedition
Spend 10 days living and working within the Brazilian Amazon
Jungle environment, plus a few days either side for travel and tourist
experiences, as we journey deep into the heart of the rainforest.
Our team will meet you at Eduardo Gomes International
Airport on the first day of the expedition and transport you to your local accommodation for the first night. Here you will meet the leaders of the expedition.
We will journey through the landscape by vehicle, gradually acclimatising in order to reach our camp. This is a relaxed day to allow you time to familiarise yourself
with the country and the climate. We then begin our expedition in earnest.
Based from our fixed camp you will initially be briefed on the types of environment found within the Jungle, its Flora and Fauna, and the Water Cycle. We will obviously
also establish our safety rules for operating in this environment. Over the remaining days and nights we do not stick to a rigid training schedule as the jungle allows many possibilities, some teaching will take place from a fixed camp and others will be taught as part of a journeying phase through the jungle, however we guarantee as a minimum you will learn:
The Rules and Psychology of Jungle survival
It takes a mindset to operate within this environment, an environment which is often portrayed as hostile or extreme. However it is your mindset that will open up the opportunities. At times it may feel like everything is out their to either kill you or make you feel uncomfortable, but with the appropriate mindset, this
is transformed to one of wonder and respect for the indigenous communities that call this place home.
Orientation and Navigation with Natural Indicators, Compass and the realities of GPS in the Jungle. You will learn how to navigate dense jungle terrain using natural landmarks, the sun, and celestial bodies. Whilst also
developing skills in reading topographical maps and using a compass effectively, you will be tasked with finding your way through challenging terrain. We will
also cover journeying along water and water crossings.
Cutting Tools - The use of Jungle appropriate cutting tools and their maintenance will save your life. So we will also create tools from natural materials, including knives, spears, and fishing gear in order to adapt. The maintenance of your own tools in this unforgiving terrain is also key.
Crafts - Tools are not just within the cutting sphere too, so where resources allow you will practice crafting items like baskets, ropes, and nets, which are useful for carrying supplies or catching food. Useful Knots and ties using both man made cordage, ropes and natural materials will be explored with the construction of improvised ropes and their uses.
Trapping and Hunting - As we explore craft skills it becomes apparent that with similar techniques you will be able to design and develop hunting tools and fishing traps. We will also teach the skills pertaining to the acquisition of foods of plant origin. Including the opportunity to practice Night Hunting.
Shelter - you will discover how to construct various types of shelters using the natural materials available to you, obviously including bamboo. Moving beyond the basics we will teach you where to site the shelter to avoid insect, animal and environmental issues. As well as natural shelters, we will also be working on setting up a jungle camp, including hammock rigging and creating comfortable sleeping arrangements with clothing management in jungle specific conditions.
Water - Obtaining, collecting and making wild water safe for consumption. We will identify and locate natural water sources, including streams and rivers, aswell as improvising the collection of rain water and dew.
It is essential for the water to be filtered and purified and so you will learn a variety of methods for achieving palatable water. We will also understand the medical importance of understanding and managing dehydration and how to conserve water in a hot and humid environment.
Emergency Procedures - your safety is of our most
paramount concern and so we will visit scenarios on jungle-specific first aid, including treating insect bites, animal encounters, and tropical diseases. With our expedition medics you will learn techniques for wound care, splinting, and improvising medical tools from natural resources. We will also practice emergency medical response and evacuation procedures.
Food preparation and food preservation/conservation methods will be covered to allow for longer term living.
Fauna - we will take opportunities as presented to understand animal behaviour and learn to identify tracks, signs, and sounds of the jungle. Avoidance or management is key so we will learn details on hazard specific creatures from snakes, insects, and large mammals. With dedicated time spent on avoiding and dealing with ophidism (snake bite poisoning) and other venomous animals.
Indigenous Knowledge - During our time in the Jungle we will also be supported by and engage with local tribes to understand the cultural significance of the jungle, including traditional knowledge of plants,
animals, and survival techniques.
On the final two days of the expedition we are going to provide you with an incredible experience of being left to your own devices to look after yourself with the equipment you have made so far to be self sustaining in the Jungle. Your shelter, your food, your location will be left down to you (you may pair up or work in small teams if you wish)… and we will see you two days later. Your very own ALONE experience.
By the end of this course you will have developed a great understanding of the jungle ecosystem, craft skills pertaining to living within the jungle, and the confidence to handle real-life survival situations for this environment.
On our 10th and 11th day we will be extracted from the area by river and transported to the meeting of the Rio Negro and Solimões, here we will swim in the Rio Negro with pink dolphins, visit the Tuiuca indigenous village and lunch in a typical floating restaurant.
On the final day we will transport you back to the airport, if travelling from and to the UK the whole period you will need time of is 14 days (including travel). We will make a recommendation on which flight to book, or you may wish to get in country earlier this is up to you. We regularly enjoy having customers from lots of different countries join us, If you are flying in from a country other than the UK we will let you know what time you need to be at the airport. The course takes place in both English and Brazilian language, with translators available.
Is this course for me?
Everyone is different, and at no point will you be forced to do anything that you may not wish to participate in. You should recognise that operating in a jungle environment will require a certain level of physical fitness. By no means do you have to be an athlete but if you feel your cardio fitness or weight may be an issue already, it probably is. If you can comfortably walk a full day on the British hillside or countryside over rough terrain without issue you should be fine. If you cannot do this, in this scenario you have plenty of time to get yourself operationally fit prior to the expedition, look at it as a challenge! The heat and humidity will be high so please also bear this in mind. Once you are committed to the expedition extraction is impossible in some areas, and you will have no communications with the outside world until we reach our RV points.
