The Spoon Carving Workshop is a relaxed and rewarding half-day experience designed to introduce participants to one of the most satisfying woodland crafts. Running from 14:00 to 18:00, this workshop offers the opportunity to slow down, work with green wood, and create a functional object that will be used and enjoyed for years to come.

With a maximum group size of eight, the workshop is intentionally kept small to ensure close instruction, individual guidance, and a calm, supportive learning environment. The course is suitable for those aged 16 and over, with under-18s welcome when accompanied by an adult.

By the end of the afternoon, participants will have carved their own wooden spoon, shaped entirely by hand from a sustainably sourced billet of green wood.

A Craft That Rewards Time and Attention
Spoon carving is often considered one of the most approachable and enjoyable forest crafts, yet it offers remarkable depth. As Swedish carving legend Willi Sundqvist observed:

“Carved utensils and other objects are a joy to use and to live with.
They are the lasting result of meaningful work.”

During the workshop, instructors guide participants through the complete spoon-making process, from selecting the right piece of wood to applying the final oil finish. Emphasis is placed on understanding how green wood behaves, how to work with the grain, and how small, deliberate cuts lead to clean, elegant results.

Learning the Process
Participants are introduced to the essential tools of spoon carving and shown how to use them safely and effectively. Instruction covers:

  • Selecting appropriate wood for spoon carving
  • Splitting green wood into workable billets
  • Safe and efficient use of a folding saw
  • Fixed-blade knife grips and cutting techniques
  • Using stop cuts to control shape and depth
  • Hollowing the bowl with a crook knife
  • Refining form and balance
  • Sanding, finishing, and oiling

Rather than following a rigid pattern, participants are encouraged to let the wood guide the design. Once the core process is understood, the same techniques can be applied to everything from teaspoons to serving spoons and ladles.

A Supportive Learning Environment
The workshop is held at our World of Bushcraft Centre in the Peak District, providing a welcoming and inspiring setting for learning traditional skills.

All tools and materials are provided, and tea and coffee are available throughout the afternoon. Instruction is patient and encouraging, making the workshop suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some carving experience.

Only paid participants will have materials allocated for hands-on work. Under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

In Summary
The Spoon Carving Workshop offers a satisfying introduction to working with green wood and edged tools. Participants leave with a finished wooden utensil, a solid foundation in spoon carving techniques, and the confidence to continue carving at home or in the woods.

This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in traditional crafts, woodwork, bushcraft skills, or simply enjoying the quiet pleasure of making something useful by hand.
